Tim Tebow brings Hockey back to Augusta
The Augusta Lynx previously played in the ECHL before folding during the 2008-2009 season. The Lynx franchise will be the 32nd team in the league.
The Lynx are owned by Tim Tebow and David Hodges. Tebow is known as the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida. Hodges is also owner of the Tahoe Knight Monsters hockey team.
The team will play a 36-game home schedule at the new Augusta Arena which will seat 10,500 fans.
The original Lynx franchise played from 1998-2008. The team folded midway through the 2008-2009 when they suspended operations. Hockey made a brief return as the Augusta Riverhawks in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) from 2010-2013 but were forced to move after the ice refrigeration system at the former James Brown Arena malfunctioned. The team moved to Macon to become the Macon Mayhem.
They were named for The Masters golf tournament with the "Lynx" name as a play on the golf term. The former Lynx had four winning seasons and advanced to the third round of the playoffs in 2000.
Augusta will have natural rivalries with the Atlanta Gladiators, South Carolina Stingrays and Savannah Ghost Pirates within their new division.
