Chihuahua Savage Repeat as MASL Champions

Image
With all of the attention on Monterrey with their undefeated regular season record, it was the Chihuahua Savage which took the spotlight as they completed a sweep of the Kansas City Comets in the Ron Newman Cup final. With the score tied at 4-4 with 1:20 left, Hugo Puentes took the ball to the left side of the goal and in a half-turn, scored for the 5-4 game winner and series clincher for the Savage and repeat as Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) champions. The Savage also won a thriller in the first game of the series in Kansas City 4-3.  The Comets lead 3-1 but Chihuahua overcame that deficit with goals from Roberto Escalante and Puentes.  Escalante notched the game-winner with 3:44 left. Chihuahua swept the Baltimore Blast in last year's final. The Savage finished the regular season 16-7-1 and second place behind the San Diego Sockers in the Western Conference.  They lost the first game of the playoffs to the Tacoma Stars but then won the next two at home to advance to the confer

Version 3.0 of the Arena Football League Returns

Image
The Arena Football League (AFL) is back.   The AFL is like a cat with nine lives, just when you think they were dead, they come back to life.  The league begins its third edition of the original indoor football league which began in 1987.  The original AFL ran from 1986-2008 then again from 2010-2019.  Both leagues failed due to financial troubles.  Arena fans are hoping the league is on a better financial foundation to make a strong start but with teams in Salina, Kansas and Billings, Montana the question will be if the new AFL will have enough viable markets to survive. The third edition starts with an ambitious plan with 16 teams in their return.  Some are teams from other indoor leagues and a few teams have been resurrected from previous AFL franchises.  The league is already planning to add the Arizona Bandits and Chicago Rush in 2025. Teams will play 10 games with the top three teams in each division making the playoffs.  The division winners will get a first-round bye.  ArenaBow

Jacksonville State Wins College Bowling Title

Image
In the first year of bowling, Jacksonville State recently won the 2024 National Championship in College Bowling with a thrilling 4-3 over Arkansas State.  The match was played in front of a national television audience and a packed house at Detroit's historic Thunderbowl lanes. Former McKendree Coach Shannon O'Keefe knows how to build a championship program as she led McKendree to the 2017 and 2022 titles.  She led Jacksonville State to success with her first team. In a battle between the nation’s top two teams (the 12th time they had met this season), the top-ranked and top-seeded Jacksonville State Gamecocks (103-23) found themselves in a 3-2 hole behind No. 2 Arkansas State Red Wolves with their backs against the wall. The Red Wolves definitely pushed Jacksonville State, reversing momentum after a back-and-forth start to win the fourth and fifth games to take a 3-2 lead and pull to within one win of their first national title. It didn’t faze the Gamecocks, however. They sett

New Roller Derby League Planned

Roller Derby has been around in some form since the 1930s.  From leagues to entertainment to the numerous flat-track teams around the United States.  The Extreme Roller Derby (ERD) is planning a new variation to the sport in 2025. The most notable change is the track.  The ERD will feature the "Extreme Ramp".  This addition will be 25 feet high and at a 45-degree angle.  The ERD banked track will also have 15 feet added to the straightaway to create more action.  The league will have eight city-named teams but will all play in the Extreme RollerDome in Costa Mesa, California.  The arena will have a seating capacity of 2,000. Some other notable features include: Extreme substitutions with female jammers vs male blockers and male jammers vs. female blockers. Jammers can score double points or more in Extreme Substitution wars. Each city team will field a men's and women's team. Regular season will run from January through October. Twenty (20) regular season matches will
