Pro Frisbee League Begins 2024 Season

The newly rebranded Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) - formerly known as the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) - prepares to take flight this weekend for their 13th season with 24 teams in the United States and Canada.  Each team will play 12 regular season games.  The season will end with the 13th Championship Weekend from August 23-24 at Zion Bank Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah.

What's new this season?

  • The name.  During the offseason, the league entered into a long-term licensing agreement with Sport Dimension Inc. which is the owner of the Frisbee trademark for the use of the name.  This allowed the league to evolve from the American Ultimate Disc League to the Ultimate Frisbee Association.
  • For the first time, there will be a new disc which has more distance and more stable in the wind.  
  • The league will have the first "Super Series" to start the season.  
  • DC and Dallas will have new coaches.  Lauren Boyle takes over in DC while former assistant Darius Tse takes over in Dallas.
What to look for in 2024:
  • Can the New York Empire become the first team to three-peat?  The Empire have won 30 straight games.
  • Will Detroit Mechanix end losing streak? The Mechanix have lost 74 straight games.  Their last win was April 2017 over Chicago.

The Union Hockey League (UHL) which is a senior "A" semi-pro hockey league representing the Midwest and Northeast, will begin their 2023-2024 season this month with eight teams.   The UHL is hybrid league, a mix between semi-professional hockey and senior hockey, with players being compensated for travel and other expenses via a ticket sales split but allowing them to retain their amateur status. Players can also make a substantial commission by selling season tickets and partnerships. Could Minor League Sports Come to Murfreesboro, Tennessee?

Yesterday, the city of Murfreesboro, Tennessee announced that Legacy Sports Tennessee will construct a multi-use sports and entertainment facility to be opened in 2024.  The plan features a 6,000-seat arena, outdoor amphitheater, fitness center, gaming as well as retail and dining space. With this ambitious plan, I wondered if this would open the door for any minor league sports to take notice and consider this area which is about 30 miles Southeast of Nashville.  Are we too close to Nashville?  Well, if you live here, you know that 30 miles will take at least 45 minutes or longer. This has me wondering if Murfreesboro would be a good location for a minor league sports team. Baseball Nashville has the Sounds AAA minor league team.   It isn't likely that Murfreesboro would get a team in the minor league system; however, they could get interest from a couple of the collegiate summer leagues such as the Coastal Plains League or Sunbelt League.    Basketball Except for the National Bas

Obscure Sports News

Here's an update on some of the lastest in obscure sports news: NBA G-League:   The Sioux Falls Skyforce (7-0) and Austin Spurs (5-0) are the only undefeated teams in the league.  Skyforce Guard Alondes Williams was recently named NBA G League Player of the Week.  He broke the Skyforce franchise record for points in a game with 55 points in a 138-130 win over the Salt Lake City Stars.  His performance was just the third game in NBA G League history of 55-plus points on 70-or-higher percent shooting from the field.  Williams played in college with Wake Forest. Major Arena Soccer League:   The Kansas City Comets (7-1) and Monterrey Flash (7-0) are the top teams in the Eastern Division while the Texas Outlaws (5-2-1) and San Diego Sockers (5-0) are battling for the top of the Western Division.  The Flash currently has the league's longest winning streak with seven straight wins.
