Mist Rises to Title
The Unrivaled Basketball League completed its second season with Breanna Stewart leading her Mist team with 32 points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals in an 80-74 win over the Phantom.
Unrivaled Basketball is a professional women's three-on-three basketball league which plays during the winter opposite the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
Games are played on a full court with two ends, and consist of three seven-minute periods followed by a "winning score" fourth period played under Elam Ending conditions. In Unrivaled's implementation, a "winning score" is determined by adding 11 points to the leading team's (or tied teams') score at the end of the third period. The game then continues with no game clock but with an active shot clock, and the first team to reach or exceed the "winning score" wins.
The Mist led by six points going to the fourth quarter, which in Unrivaled rules is untimed. The league adds 11 points to the score of whichever team is leading at the end of the third quarter and that is the target score. In this case, first team to 79 points won.
Stewart sealed it for the Mist at the free throw line, adding another championship to her legacy.
The league had eight teams compete this season. The league also grew beyond its single site in Medley, Fla. Unrivaled had a tour stop in Philadelphia that broke the regular-season attendance record for a professional women’s basketball game and earned $2 million in revenue for the league. Buoyed by the success of that event, Unrivaled moved its playoff semifinal round to Brooklyn and sold out Barclays Center (18,261 people) for those two games.
