Goatheads To Play In ECHL

When the new ECHL franchise in Rio Rancho, New Mexico takes the ice in 2026, calling the home team "Goatheads" won't be an insult because that will be the name for the newest expansion team.

The Goatheads name pays tribute to New Mexico's rugged character and natural landscape.  Inspired by the infamous goathead thorn which is a desert plant known for its toughness and ability to "stick" where it goes, the team's name will symbolize resilience and grit.

The Goatheads will play in the 7,000-seat Rio Rancho Events Center which is located 30 miles from Albuquerque.

The New Mexico Scorpions played in the Central Hockey League from 2006-2009 and the New Mexico Mustangs played in the North American Hockey League from 2010-2012.

In a public vote, the Goatheads beat out the Tarantula Hawks and Cutthroats.
