Major League Rugby in Trouble

Just weeks after Major League Rugby (MLR) completed its 2025 season, the league is in trouble as teams have either folded, opted out of the 2026 season or merged with other teams.

In the past week, the Miami Sharks and NOLA franchises have folded while San Diego and Los Angeles merged to become the California Legion squad. This leaves the league with eight teams on the roster for next season which is the lowest number since its first season in 2018. There doesn't appear to be any new teams expected although it has been anticipated that Indianapolis might join later. The league's annual College Draft is due in two weeks.

Current teams include: New England, Old Glory DC, Anthem RC, Chicago Hounds, Utah Warriors, Houston Sabercats, Seattle Seawolves, and California Legion (merged from LA and San Diego).

The league completed the 2025 season with 11 teams and the New England Free Jacks winning their third consecutive title in June.
