Horse Racing League in Third Season















Did you know that there is a team-based horse racing league?

The league is called the National Thoroughbred League (NTL) and was founded by Randall Lane and Bob Daugherty and supported by celebrities like Lamar Jackson and Julius Erving. The NTL is hoping to modernize horse racing through team competition.

The league is actually in their third season with 10 teams.

The teams include:
  • New York Knights
  • California Shamrocks
  • New Jersey Degens
  • Maryland Colts
  • Miami Thunderbolts
  • St. Louis Nellies
  • Nashville Dreams
  • Philadelphia Stallions
  • San Francisco Unicorns
  • Phoenix Mustangs
The most recent news was when rapper Nelly purchased the Seattle Gems team and moved it to St. Louis and renamed the Nellies.

The NTL season includes Cup events which features three races, with all 10 teams entering one horse from their roster per race. The entire competition wraps in under three hours, complete with fast-paced racing and entertaining moments between races. Distances range from six furlongs to one mile on dirt and turf, with both colts and fillies competing.

Teams earn points based on their horse’s finishing position in each race, with a heightened emphasis on the final race and bonus points awarded for overall performance.

The team with the highest total points at the end of the event wins the Cup. The team with the most points for the season earns the NTL Championship title.

July 19 - NTL Nelly Cup, Fairmount Park, Collinsville, IL
August 31 - NTL VIP Championship Weekend, Kentucky Downs, Franklin, KY

ESPN 8 - The Channel for Obscure Sports

I recently stumbled on to "The Ocho" which is ESPN's channel featuring obscure sports.  The channel was started in 2017.   The Echo broadcasts unconventional and lesser-known sports competitions such as corn hole, horseshoes, darts, air hockey, ax throwing and many others. The origin of ESPN8 came from the fictional television channel in the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story which was a full-time channel showcasing obscure competitions that were "almost a sport". Some of the most unusual competitions and events shown on the network include: Mullet championships (yes, I'm afraid there is such a thing) Teqball - combination of soccer and table tennis. Winter Indoor Football League Schedule Set

The new Winter Indoor Football League has posted their 2024 schedule on their Facebook page as five teams will participate in the league's first season.  The schedule runs from October 26th to the championship game on December 21st.   The teams include the Ohio Blitz, Pittsburgh Outlaws, New York Nightmare, UP1 Athletic Showcase (Suwanee, GA) and Eastern Shore.
