Major League Hockey Plans 3-on-3 Launch This Fall
If you like the 3-on-3 overtime format played in the National Hockey League (NHL) then you might be interested in a new hockey league with plans to launch this fall.
Major League Hockey (MLH) is planning to have 16 teams with 14 players on each team. The league is looking to place teams in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Ontario, New York, Minnesota, California, Arizona, Missouri, New England, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas or Florida.
MLH plans to shorten the game to 24 minutes with one intermission.
The new league also plans:
- For every victory a team earns, they will receive a $100,000 bonus that will be split among players and coaches.
- Teams will be able to sign three elite players who have played professionally in North American and European leagues.
- NCAA and Junior players are eligible to play in the league.
- Women players will also be considered.
At this time there are no further details about the new proposed league but is planning to play during the winter in competition with the NHL. The MLH is also not the first league to play 3-on-3. The 3ICE league is playing their third season this summer with eight city-based teams.
