Top American Football Teams in Europe

American Football International - which is a great resource of information on American football teams in other countries - recently released their year-end list of their Top 25 teams in Europe.  Most European teams play their seasons during the spring or summer so as not to conflict with their own "football" (soccer) seasons.  The Top 25 features teams from Germany (11), Austria (4), France (3), Finland (2), Italy (2), Poland (1), Denmark (1) and Sweden (1).

Here are the Top 10 teams in Europe:

  1. Rhein Fire (Germany) - Won European League of American Football (EFL) championship.  Averaged 45 points per game over the regular season as they dominated the league with an undefeated season.
  2. Stuttgart Surge (Germany) - Finished 11-3 in the ELF, losing to Rhein in the championship game.  They were 2-20 in their first two seasons.
  3. Vienna Vikings (Austria) - They were the defending champions from 2022 but were stunned by the Surge in the playoffs.  They finished with a record of 13-1.
  4. Potsdam Royals (Germany) - Won the championship of the German Football League (GFL) in 2023.  They rolled to a 34-7 over the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns.
  5. Dresden Monarchs (Germany) - The Monarchs were 11-3 in the GFL.  Monarchs’ quarterback Steven Duncan had a dominant season in the GFL. He threw for 4,703 yards, 58 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. The Monarchs narrowly missed out on a German Bowl final this year after falling in the semifinals but remained one of the most potent offenses in Europe.
  6. Frankfurt Galaxy (Germany) - Frankfurt went 10-2 in the regular season in the ELF and won a playoff game before losing in the semifinal. Their only loss came to the Rhein Fire.
  7. Schwabisch Hall Unicorns (Germany) - Got off to a slow start but finished 11-4 and lost to Potsdam in the final.
  8. New Yorker Lions (Germany) - The Lions appeared to have regained some of their former glory in the GFL.  Their running game defined them this year as British running back Dwayne Obi had a breakout year and led the league with 105.5 yards per game.
  9. Berlin Thunder (Germany) - Finished 8-5 in the ELF.  They made the most of it and qualified for a wildcard spot in the playoffs.
  10. Munich Ravens (Germany) - With a 7-5 record in the ELF, The Ravens were one of the best offensive teams in Europe this past season as well as a strong defense.
