Copperheads Strike Down Hound Dogs
[This is a fictional sports story]
Greensboro, North Carolina - For the second time in three games, the Tennessee Hound Dogs had a weak offense performance against another top team in the Southeast Division. The North Carolina Copperheads (6-1) powered past the Hound Dogs 33-9 to take sole possession of second place in the division.
The Hound Dogs were a woeful four-of-17 on three down conversions and never entered the North Carolina red zone in the game. The only scores were three long distance field goals from David Coutee.
"When your kicker is the only offense you have, then you've got problems," Commented Tennessee Head Coach Colton Preston. "We had way too many three and outs in the game and never could get anything going. We really need to take a look at what we're doing."
The Copperheads drove down the field on their first possession of the game and got a six-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Ballage to Korey Burgess then later in the opening quarter, Ballage tossed a three-yard pass on a play-action to Darnell Glasgow to put the Copperheads up 14-0 before the Hound Dogs ever got their initial first down in the game.
Glasgow was the workhorse for the Copperheads as he carried the ball for 105 yards in the game including a 35-yard burst up the middle right before halftime to give North Carolina a 21-6 lead.
The only points the Hound Dogs could get in the second half was a 59-yard field goal from Coutee. The defense did their part holding the Copperheads to four field goals in the second half.
North Carolina shut down the Tennessee ground game as the Hound Dogs' leading rusher, Jonathan Byrd was held to 28 yards and the team was limited to 72 total yards on the ground. Rich Lewis was off his game completing only 21 of 42 pass attempts.
"We seem tired," Preston added. "Whatever is wrong we need to fix it because we've got to play everyone again one more time, so this is the home stretch and we have to start playing better."
The Hound Dogs will host the Florida Tarpons in Chattanooga next week. They beat the Tarpons 16-6 in Tampa earlier in the season. Florida is currently 4-3 and in fourth place in the Southeast Division.
