Minor League Baseball Coming to Murfreesboro, Tennessee?
Read the article here.
I'm conflicted about this on if this is a good idea or not.
Murfreesboro is approximately 30 miles from the existing Nashville Sounds International League team the Triple A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
If they build it, will they come? I think there are a lot of people who would be more willing to support a local team than to drive into Nashville to attend a Sounds game especially if you have ever had the pain of driving up I-24 into Nashville at any time during the day or night.
I still don't know if it's a good idea.
The first thing is that Murfreesboro does not have a stadium so it would need to be built and there is already controversy surrounding a plan to build it on the site of a location called Cannonsburgh Village which is a local historic park.
Murfreesboro is growing at an explosive rate. It is the second largest growing city in the United States with a current population of over 166,000. Murfreesboro is also the home to Middle Tennessee State University.
The only previous minor league team I have found was a team called the Murfreesboro Musicians which played in the World Basketball Association (WBA) in 2006. The WBA was a spring men's basketball league. They played at Oakland High School gym. The Musicians finished the season 12-10.
I do think Murfreesboro would be a good "second tier" sports location for teams in lacrosse, arena football and indoor soccer.
Someone asked what would they name the team? Some ideas were: Maniacs, Militia, Renegades, Matrix but I'm not sure any of those will stick. Minor league teams have dug deep to find the most unique and ridiculous names in recent years so nothing would surprise me.
