Obscure Football Championship Updates


As the traditional football season kicks off in the next two months, there are some indoor, semi-pro and European leagues which are wrapping up their seasons with championship games.  Let's take a look at the teams which have been crowned as champions in their leagues.

The Columbus Lions from Columbus, Georgia claimed the championship in the lower-tier American Indoor Football Assocation (AIFA) dominating the league.  The Lions dominated the Mississippi Raiders 55-10 in front of 4,500 home fans to complete a perfect undefeated season.  Quarterback Marcus Brooks led the way for the Lions as he accounted for six touchdowns with five through the air and one on the ground.  Columbus moved from the National Arena League (NAL) to the AIFA this season.  The Lions should really play in a more competitive league.  Here's a report on the game:  https://www.wtvm.com/2023/07/16/columbus-lions-cap-off-perfect-season-with-55-10-championship-win/

In Europe, the Bialystok Lowlanders won back-to-back Polish Bowl titles in a thrilling 38-35 win over the Silesia Rebels.  The Lowlanders had a 35-14 lead early in the fourth quarter but weathered a furious comeback by the Rebels to win Polish Bowl XVIII.  Watch a replay of the game here:  https://www.youtube.com/live/mr7JU51XdZw?feature=share

In the Irish "Super Bowl", the Dublin Rebels completed an undefeated season defeating UCD in a close game to repeat as Shamrock Bowl champions.  Dublin won 40-34 in a close game for their 10th overall title.  See more details here:  Ty Henry leads Dublin Rebels to Shamrock Bowl victory in ‘the best game I have seen in Europe’ | Independent.ie

Switzerland crowned the Calanda Broncos as champions of Swiss Bowl XXXVII.  The Broncos defeated the Thun Tigers 53-21 to win their fifth Swiss Bowl in six years and their 12th overall title.  Watch the replay here:  https://www.youtube.com/live/kh5v7gKT0Jc?feature=share

In the semi-pro leagues, the Georgia Thrashers won the Amateur to Professional Developmental Football League (APDFL) title defeating the Mississippi Dynasty 26-22.  Watch replay of the game here:  https://www.youtube.com/live/XAXxzy6A69g?feature=share

Finally, the South Florida Browns won the Elite American Football League (EAFL) championship edging the Georgia Cobras 21-20.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate a game story or video of the game.  If these leagues want coverage, their social media platforms need to up their game.

After a rough restart of the Arena Football League (AFL) last season which began with 16 teams and eventually dropped to eight teams by season’s end, the teams which survived formed a new league called Arena Football 1 (AF1)  and have released their 2025 schedule for the 12 teams which will once again try to establish its’ place on the indoor football map. ESPN 8 - The Channel for Obscure Sports

I recently stumbled on to "The Ocho" which is ESPN's channel featuring obscure sports.  The channel was started in 2017.   The Echo broadcasts unconventional and lesser-known sports competitions such as corn hole, horseshoes, darts, air hockey, ax throwing and many others. The origin of ESPN8 came from the fictional television channel in the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story which was a full-time channel showcasing obscure competitions that were "almost a sport". Some of the most unusual competitions and events shown on the network include: Mullet championships (yes, I'm afraid there is such a thing) Teqball - combination of soccer and table tennis. Onewheel - Skateboard with one wheel Excel world championship - Did someone say spreadsheets? Slippery stairs - Do we really need a sport for this? 2025 Arena/Indoor Football Leagues Preview

Are you ready for some (indoor) football? The arena/indoor football season is upon us. In fact, one league - the American Indoor Football league - has already started the indoor season. Here are some short previews of the most notable seven indoor leagues which will play this season: Indoor Football League (IFL) Website: https://goifl.com/ The IFL is the longest active arena/indoor league as it enters its 16th season.  Although the league is the premier indoor football league in the United States; however, they continue to have issues with franchise stability as the Duke City Gladiators, Frisco Fighters and Sioux Falls Storm deciding to sit out the 2025 season.  The league did add one new team - Fishers Freight - this season.  The Arizona Rattlers won the IFL title last season after finishing third in the Western Conference.  The Rattlers finished the season on a six-game winning streak.  The Rattlers upset the Vegas Knight Hawks 39-38 in the first round the...
