Jim Kelly's Nephew leads Toronto Argonauts to Grey Cup Title

Chad Kelly, the backup quarterback - and nephew of NFL Jim Kelly - used mostly on short-yardage plays during the regular season, came on in relief of injured McLeod Bethel-Thompson in the fourth quarter and led the deciding drive for a 24-23 victory over the heavily favored Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  The Argonauts won their first Grey Cup title since 2017.  Toronto's win denied Winnipeg's third consecutive Cup in front of over 30,000 fans in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Toronto linebacker Hénoc Muamba, who had a key interception late in the game after letting one slip away, was named the game’s most valuable player and top Canadian.

Kelly drove the Argos downfield with just under four minutes left and Winnipeg up 23-17. The quarterback the Argos never planned on using handed off to A.J. Ouellette for a six-yard run to cap what would be the winning drive.  Muamba’s interception seemed to be the clincher, but a Boris Bede field-goal attempt soon after was blocked, giving the Bombers the ball deep in their territory with two minutes to go.

Smith sacked Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros twice but negated the second one with a facemask penalty. Then Smith made amends by blocking Winnipeg’s attempt at a game-winning field goal in the final minute.

Toronto finishes the season at 13-7.  The Argonauts won the Eastern Division then topped the Montreal Alouettes 34-27 in the East final.  The Grey Cup is their 18th title in team history.  The Winnpeg Blue Bombers finished with a 16-4 record winning the Western Division and defeating the British Columbia Lions 28-20 in the West final.
