Third Edition of XFL Releases New Team Names/Logos
The XFL is back....again.
Today, the third version of the XFL released a YouTube video of the eight cities which will take the field in February.
The XFL, which originally played in the spring of 2001 and was bankrolled by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and NBC television. WWE's guru Vince McMahon was the face of the inventive spring football league which played a full season but did not return the following season.
The second version of the XFL launched in the spring of 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to suspend operations midway through the season.
A group led by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson purchased the league for $15 million dollars in August 2020. This new version of the XFL is now planning a return in February 2023 with these eight teams:
Arlington Renegades
Arlington, which is a suburb of Dallas, will once again have the Renegades which played as the Dallas Renegades in 2020. They will be coached by Bob Stoops and play in Choctaw Stadium.
DC Defenders
DC also played in the recent version of the XFL and will return in 2023. The Defenders will be coached by Reggie Barlow and play at Audi Field.
Houston Roughnecks
The Roughnecks were one of the best teams in the XFL in 2020 with a 5-0 record but the league suspended play. The Roughnecks will be coached by defensive guru Wade Phillips. Houston will call TDECU Stadium home.
Orlando Guardians
The Guardians will be a mash up of teams from previous XFL seasons. Orlando had the Rage in the original league and the Guardians nickname was used by the New York franchise in the 2020 XFL. Terrell Buckley will coach the Guardians who will play at Camping World Stadium.
St. Louis Battlehawks
St. Louis football fans are thrilled to have their popular Battlehawks back again. The team played in the 2020 XFL with a huge fan support. The Battlehawks will be coached by Anthony Becht and will play at The Dome at America's Center.
San Antonio Brahmas
The city of San Antonio has been jerked around with different football leagues but were never in any of the previous XFL editions. Their last team were the Commanders in the Alliance of American Football (AAF). The Brahmas will play in the Alamodome and coached by Hines Ward.
Seattle Sea Dragons
Known as the Dragons in the 2020 XFL, the new team will add "Sea" to their name. The Sea Dragons will play at Lumen Field and coached by Jim Haslett.
Vegas Vipers
Here's another mashup of former spring league franchises with the original XFL featuring the Las Vegas Outlaws while the AAF had a team called the Tampa Bay Vipers. Vegas will be coached by Rod Woodson. There was no listing of where the team will be calling their home field.
The XFL #3 will kick off on February 18, 2023. The league will hold a player draft next month. All games will be played on Disney and ESPN platforms. The new XFL will also be competing with the United States Football League (USFL) which played this past spring with eight teams playing all of their games in Birmingham, Alabama.
