Major League Football Coming Real Soon
Lately it has become a job keeping track of the new professional football leagues popping up around us. The "new" United States Football League (USFL) will soon be finishing their first season, the XFL plans yet another re-launch next spring and in recent weeks another league called Major League Football have slowly leaked plans for their start. I really didn't take much notice of the MLFB because it has had a failure to launch before but now it appears they will actually give it a try and soon.
Yesterday the MLFB announced that they will have a team based in Arkansas called the Arkansas Attack to join the Virginia Armada, Ohio Force (based in Canton, Ohio) and Alabama Airborne. The four teams will play in August in a "showcase" season. There really isn't much detail about the schedule which was supposed to be released on June 6th.
Former NFL Head Coach Jerry Glanville is to be the coach for the Alabama Airborne.
MLFB (why the "B" in the acronym?) actually began in 2014 but had some complications actually getting on the field as they initially had plans to have eight teams but paired it down to four teams for the first season.
Some rule differences include:
- Field goals longer than 50 yards will be worth 4 points.
- The ground CAN cause a fumble.
- There will be a 30-second play clock.
- A 10-minute sudden death overtime will be played. If the game remains tied after overtime, there will be alternating possessions from the 10-yard line where teams will get four chances to score a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
