Wiffleball is Alive and Well
If you grew up in the 70s like I did, chances are that you owned a Nerf football and a whiffle ball. Whiffle ball was always the safer version of baseball because of the unique plastic ball with holes. The ball and sport were quiet for several years but recently the sport has made a comeback with the Premier League Wiffle (PLW).
The PLW consists of 10 teams playing all their games at Hideaway Field in Las Vegas. Games are played every weeknight Monday through Friday with games televised on Twitch. The league features a semi-fast pitch format played with clean, un-scuffed balls and yellow-taped bats. There is not a pitch speed-limit; however, a ball hitting the strike zone must be 55mph or less to be called a strike by radar. There is also no base running as bases are awarded based on where the ball is hit. Infielders have five seconds on bat contact to make a play on a ground ball and hit the back stop. At the end of each season, the two last place teams play in relegation games and must defend their spots against challengers for their spots in the league.
The current 10 teams are: Lightning, Night Owls, Legends, Sandvipers, The Ones, Warbirds, Cajuns, Snappers, Vaderz and Bombers. The league plays 128 games a year with most players and teams from the local area. The league raises money for animal rescues.
The Ones and Sandvipers are currently at the top of the standings with 7-2 records. Jim Dodos (Warbirds) leads the league with a .517 batting average. The league's top pitcher is Billy Santiwan (Vaderz) with a 1.06 ERA.
