Chihuahua has been promoted from the second division while Turlock was demoted. The Mesquite Outlaws, Monterrey Flash and Rochester Lancers are sitting out this season. Soles de Sonora folded.
The major change this season is that the standings will be based on a points system. Three points will be awarded for a win in regulation time, two points for an overtime or shootout win, one point for an overtime or shootout loss and no points for a regulation time loss. The division winners and five wildcard teams will qualify for the playoffs.
