Dresden Monarchs Win First German Bowl Title


The Dresden Monarchs won their first German Bowl title in team history over the weekend by defeating the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns 28-19 in Frankfurt.

Dresden overcame a 19-6 deficit to take control and pulled away from the Unicorns.


Monarchs' quarterback Kyle Carta-Samuels Jr. - who played college football at Colorado State - and running back Devwah Whaley - formerly played at Arkansas - led the team combing for 373 yards of offense.   Samuels with 222 yards passing and two touchdowns and Whaley with 151 yards rushing on 30 carries and one touchdown.

Dresden's last appearance in the German Bowl was a 35-34 loss to the New Yorker Lions in 2013.

Schwabisch Hall has played in the last eight German Bowls winning twice (2017, 2018).

Dresden has been a member of the German Football League since 2002.  They have been one of the premier teams in the GFL since 2012 winning at least 10 games in a season nine times.  The Monarchs finished the 2021 season 12-1-0.   In the playoffs they defeated Allgau 50-13 followed by a 37-0 shutout of Saarland in the semifinals.  

Ulrich Dauber is the current head coach for the Monarchs.  Dauber, a former player for Schwabisch, joined the Monarchs as the head of the youth department in 2017.  Two months later he was promoted to head coach.  He has been 33-6-1 since then.
