Football Friday (9/17/21)

Hello friends.  Today's Football Friday is the last one for a while.  I am going to take a break from weekly reports on obscure football leagues and teams around world.  Please subscribe for individual blog posts on football and other obscure sports leagues and teams.

DUDE'S FINAL ARENA/INDOOR FOOTBALL TOP TEN:

#1 - Massachusetts Pirates (IFL) 14-3-0.

Garrett Hartley kicked a game winning 31-yard field goal in overtime to defeat the Arizona Rattlers 37-34 to win the United Bowl title.  Pirates quarterback Alejandro Bennifield was the game's Most Valuable Player as he was 10 of 23 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown and was also the Pirates' leading rusher with 56 yards on ten carries with two scores.  Massachusetts ended the season on an 11-game winning streak.

#2 - Arizona Rattlers (IFL) 14-3-0

Lost to the Massachusetts Pirates 37-34 in overtime in the United Bowl Championship.  Both teams had possession from the opponent's 20 in overtime. The Rattlers went first. They had two receivers open in the end zone, but they collided trying to make the catch and neither could hold on.  QB Drew Powell tried to will himself across the goal line but lost control of the ball at the 1. It trickled into the end zone where Aarion Maxey-Penton recovered it for Massachusetts.  Former NFL kicker, Garrett Hartley kicked the game winning field goal for the Pirates.  The Rattlers have lost five straight championship games at home, their second as a member of the Indoor Football League.

#3 - Albany Empire (NAL) 9-1-0. Won National Arena League championship. Season complete.

#4 - Omaha Beef (CIF) 9-4-0. Won Champions Bowl VI. Season complete.

Playoff Results:

Hamburg Sea Devils 30, Wroclaw Panthers 27:  The Sea Devils scored the winning touchdown late in the game and held off the Panthers to advance to the ELF championship game.

Frankfurt Galaxy 36, Cologne Centurions 6:  The Galaxy had no trouble in their semifinal matchup with Cologne as they scored all of their points in the first half to cruise to the win and advanced to the title game against Hamburg.

Czech Republic
The Vysocina Gladiators captured their first-ever Czech title by blanking the defending champion Prague Lions 23-0. Gladiators QB Clark Hazlett rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team.

Finland
In a championship game duel between the top two offensive teams in Finland’s Maple League, defenses ruled the day as the defending champion Kuopio Steelers edged the Helsinki Roosters 14-0 in Maple Bowl XLII.

Germany
The German Football League playoffs begin this weekend with the quarterfinals. (Excerpts from American Football International)

Dresden Monarchs vs. Allgau Comets
Saturday’s first quarterfinal features a battle of widely different offenses, as the 6-3 Allgau Comets look to pull off a shocking upset of the 9-1 Dresden Monarchs. After being upset in their season opener, the Monarchs have rolled almost unabated to nine straight wins thanks to their dynamic passing attack. Former top high school recruit and Colorado State standout KJ Carta-Samuels has exploded onto the European scene in his first pro season, throwing for a GFL leading 3,340 yards and 46 touchdowns to just five interceptions.

Schwabisch Hall Unicorns vs. Braunschweig New Yorker Lions
The undefeated Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns will face their toughest test yet against the 5-5 Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. These two teams have collided in five of the last six German Bowls, but an unusual season for the Lions will mean a first-round exit for one of these two perennial champions.

Saarland Hurricanes vs. Cologne Crocodiles
One of the GFL’s biggest surprises, the 8-2 Saarland Hurricanes, facing off with the 6-4 Cologne Crocodiles. The Hurricanes became an unlikely powerhouse after climbing up from GFL 2, led by new QB Josh Goldin. The American has 2,898 yards, 32 touchdowns and five picks, throwing to the likes of Vic Wharton and Marvin Fuchs, but they have nothing on Cologne’s boom-or-bust attack.

Potsdam Royals vs. Munich Cowboys
Potsdam has been a powerhouse this season thanks to Northern Michigan running back Jake Mayon, who has ripped through the GFL this season with 1,419 yards and 20 touchdowns. Rested thanks to a meaningless last week, Mayon could continue his rampage, but when he’s been stopped so have the Royals.

Switzerland
The defending Swiss champion Calanda Broncos finished the regular season by pounding the Basel Gladiators (2-6) 52-14. The Broncos finished first in the league and will now face the Winterthur Warriors in the Swiss semifinals.
