Disco Is Not Dead
If you thought Trash Pandas was a bizarre nickname for a minor league baseball team then you obviously haven't heard of the Carolina Disco Turkeys.
That's right. Disco is not dead. It now lives in a baseball team. If John Travolta played baseball, THIS would be his team.
The Carolina Disco Turkeys are a team in the All American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They share Winston-Salem's Truist Stadium with the city's other minor league team - Winston-Salem Dash. The AAABA is an independent collegiate league to showcase top players at all levels of college baseball. They play mostly an independent schedule against teams from other leagues.
So what is a "Disco Turkey"?
For locals in the Triad region of North Carolina, a disco turkey is also known as a peacock.
The team's logo features a pointing peacock wearing a disco suit pointing with the legendary Babe Ruth-pose of calling his homerun.
As you can imagine with their bizarre nickname, merchandising has been a hit. The team announced that after its first round of preorders, they had sold Disco Turkey's merchandise to every state but Alaska.
Kirk Cabana is the team's first manager. He has a lot of experience coaching college players. He was a head coach in the Puerto Rico Collegiate League and spent last summer as an assistant coach with the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms of the Coastal Plain League. Cabana also serves as a full-time assistant at Carolina University.
The Disco Turkeys will play a 40-game schedule. They open on May 24th at High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms and play their first home game on June 4th against the Martinsville Ponies. At the end of the season they will participate in the annual AAABA tournament in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
